I am looking forward to read your article on Birth of A Nation, I think it's a wonderful film despite all the negativism about it.

Keep on blogging!

@Squish! First let me say, that is quit...Greetings Michaël,

First let me say, that is quite a list! I can see how such a daunting list might frighten some folks, given others the 'willies aka trembles' just thinking about all the wonderful films they've missed and/or all the films they better hurry up and add to their list and pronto!

I like that the list is sorted by year, it is a treat to return to eras gone by and watch or re-watch films from the past and see how so many, many films of the past decade plus have been directly influenced by the films that have come before them. In addition, I wrote an interesting article in response to an article I read regarding the significance of The Birth of a Nation that I'm sure frightened some, angered others. We cannot deny the past any more than we can deny the relevance of films.

Cheers for such a thorough and thoughtful blog - I'm only just beginning to look around so I'm looking forward to reading more.

@LYZ: Really, you hated Bram Stokers Dracula? I must visit your blog and read your article. I have very nearly the opposite feelings.I'd argue against Wall-E, the 2nd and 3rd Bourne movies, Atonement was good but not great. I agree with you on Into The Wild, Babel, and The Prestige.

Cheers one and all, please drop by my blog if you're interested in some similar and at times different thoughts about films.

best,
rory
Above the Line Practical MoviesAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2379353038189641208.post-34337788447978047862011-01-05T18:21:29.253-05:002011-01-05T18:21:29.253-05:00That's why you include them all!

I agree on most of your comments although, I think that some films are overrated (Amélie, Chicago) and some are underapreciated...
I think it's difficult to say if a film will stay as a classic a year after it came, especially with the DVD and Flixster of today, some films resurrect after they go out on DVD.MPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08366182655374603950noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2379353038189641208.post-23137943350540498182010-12-31T09:15:56.682-05:002010-12-31T09:15:56.682-05:00Excuse the long comment, but I've got a lot to...Excuse the long comment, but I've got a lot to say about the films taken out of the book.
1) Fanny and Alexander-They are taking out Bergman?!
2)Bram Stoker's Dracula-Thank God! I wrote an article (that was published in Bright Lights Film Journal) that is essentially a rant on how much I hate that film.
3)The Big Lebowski-I think it's a film you need to see before you die so your in on the jokes that are so pervasive in our culture.
4)Eyes Wide Shut-I'm a sucker for Kubrick, but it is not his best.
5)Amelie-I find it highly overrated.
6)O Brother Where Art Thou-probably the Coen's weakest picture.
7)The Royal Tenenbaums-too quirky for my sensibility.
8)A.I.-though based on a Kubrick idea, I think this movie was a massive failure.
9)Gangs of New York-preferred it to The Departed
10)Adaptation-sure it's off the wall, but I'm a screenwriter so I find it necessary.
11)Chicago-harkens back to the heyday of the musicals back in the 1930s.
12)Hero-not as good as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but better than House of Flying Daggers.
13)Lost in Translation-why does Sofia Coppola direct again?
14)Collateral-a well-told, small film but not big enough to be memorable in the years to come despite the actors.
15)The Aviator-taking two of Scorcese's off, really?
16)Sideways-like Collateral, too indie
17)The Constant Gardner-I love Rachel Weisz but did not love this film.
18)The Queen-Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen are really the only two reasons to see it.
19)The Prestige-too much of a fantasy, genre pic.
20)Children of Men-great cinematography, but that's about it.
21)Babel-couldn't understand it, irony.
22)Into the Wild-never could make it through, thought the main character was stupid.
23)Atonement-I guess they just found it too depressing.
24)The Bourne Ultimatum-It's just a good action flick, that is all.
25)Wall-E: I didn't like it the first time, but it grows on me more and more each viewing.
26)The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: one word-slow!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
