Great list. That would be my exact top 2 as well, though I might change the order depending on my mood. I'd probably place The Trouble With Harry higher, I have a lot of affection for that one, and I like some of the later films (especially Family Plot and Frenzy) more than you seem to. Ditto for some of the earliest ones, like Young and Innocent, which is a lot of fun.

DeleteThe Trouble With Harry is the first Hitchcock I ever saw and I have a special for it too. However, since I love many Hitchcock films it was hard to dispatch some over others. Frenzy wasn't my cup of tea but I really enjoyed Family Plot. Discovering Hitch's filmography is a lot of fun and it is never boring.

ReplyDeleteYour top 2 would be my top 2. I knew what was going to happen in Psycho, of course, so that weakened the impact for me a little bit. I've always wondered how I would have reacted if I could have gone in blind.
I thought Dial M for Murder was terrific and it would be in my top 5. Vertigo would not make my top 5. The 39 Steps left me a little let down when it was finally revealed what they were. I had a "that's it?" response to it. To Catch a Thief was a fun film, perhaps a little lighter than Hitchcock usually does.
Back in 2010 I tried to watch his entire oeuvre but many things got in the way... However, the few that I haven't seen I own most of them on DVD but the versions are bad... I'll wait until they have proper releases.

Dial M for Muder is one of the Hitchcock I'll have to revisit soon first for Grace Kelly and also because it is a great suspense.
Vertigo is kind of untouchable because many people consider it to be Hitchcock's mastepiece. It is one indeed, but I prefer my top 3 before.
To Catch a Thief underappreciated and I really like it. Not as deep as Hitch's other films but like you mentioned a lot of fun.
Wow, I sure have a lot of catching up to do almost ashamed to admit how many of these I still haven't seen... but at least we can all agree on 1 and 2.
