Poll : Director Retrospective

As a theme for this summer I’ve chose to do my first director retrospective. Narrowing down to four choices wasn’t that easy. Especially, since I could have put 500+ names down there for you to vote! Taken from Andrew SarrisAmerican Directors and Directions. They are all American directors that marked in some way Film History.
I haven’t seen many of their films and any of these directors that will be featured here this summer will be a pleasure to discover.
Anthony Mann
Author of many Westerns starring James Stewart, Mann is also a Film Noir director that made his mark and is now regarded as one of the most influential directors of his time.

Preston Sturges
A great director who knew how to write witty comedies and that made few films despite their grand impact. For contemporary movie lovers the Coen bros are admirers of his work.

King Vidor
This is a director I’ve never watch a movie before and I was planning on discovering his The Big Parade.

Raoul Walsh

He was a director and thrillers, film noirs, war movies, gangster films were some of the most notable genre from his most known films.

So vote and fill my summer with great viewings!

    1. Hi Michaël... I think it would be great to see reviews from any of these directors' films. I know that doesn't help much, so I voted anyway.

    2. Thanks for voting Barry! I'll probably get to the 3 that will be left out when I'll get through the winner's filmography!

  2. I tried to vote on Anthony Mann but I don't know if it "took". Any how, the reason was purely selfish. I'm planning a short film noir retrospective and I'd be interested in seeing your reviews of Mann's films. I like his Westerns but I don't know if I've seen any of his noir yet.

Of the directors you list, however, Preston Sturges is actually my favorite. He always makes me laugh. He also wrote the screenplays for some fine films before he directed.

    1. I think it worked. It's the first time I try this element on blogger so it might have some weird things going on...

Mann, is one of the group that needs more spread around the cinephile world! However, how the vote turns out I'll surely participate in your film noir retrospective Marie!

Sturges might be the one I'm more accustomed to. But I still need to see a bunch of his work.

  3. All very interesting choices, and all who I would love to learn more about. I voted for King Vidor, but I'd be happy if it goes to any of these directors.

  5. The only director I'm familiar with is Preston Sturges(I've watched Lady Eve and Sullivan's Travels), so I'd like to see what you have to say about his output. In time, I'm sure I'll get to the other directors. King Vidor's The Big Parade (1925) is on my watchlist, as is Raoul Walsh's High Sierra (1941). It will be interesting to see which director tops the poll!

    1. Thanx for voting Chris! Sturges is probably the most well known of the bunch. I would love it if he was getting first but I'm eager to discover the other director's works.

  6. All the options are wonderful, but I think you should go with Preston Sturges, a great way to spend summer.
