Poll : Director Retrospective

As a theme for this summer I’ve chose to do my first director retrospective. Narrowing down to four choices wasn’t that easy. Especially, since I could have put 500+ names down there for you to vote! Taken from Andrew Sarris’ American Directors and Directions. They are all American directors that marked in some way Film History.
I haven’t seen many of their films and any of these directors that will be featured here this summer will be a pleasure to discover.
Anthony Mann
Author of many Westerns starring James Stewart, Mann is also a Film Noir director that made his mark and is now regarded as one of the most influential directors of his time.

Preston Sturges
A great director who knew how to write witty comedies and that made few films despite their grand impact. For contemporary movie lovers the Coen bros are admirers of his work.

King Vidor
This is a director I’ve never watch a movie before and I was planning on discovering his The Big Parade.

Raoul Walsh

He was a director and thrillers, film noirs, war movies, gangster films were some of the most notable genre from his most known films.

So vote and fill my summer with great viewings!

The 10 Greatest Films of All Time by the voters of The Most Influential Directors Poll

With Great power comes great responsibility. Just like Peter Parker, every important director had a great power in the way his/her films were/are made. With this year’s Most Influential Director’s Poll I’ve asked voters to list the director’s most significant movie.

Just in time, the new Sight and Sound poll got out the eve of the closing of the ballots. I could that way compile those results with the voters’ lists.

The goal here is to take the Top ten films voted and include them into the nomination of a virtual Hall of Fame here at Le Mot du Cinephiliaque. Once the movie is listed in the Top 10 it is sacred as a representative work of the director. Each director needs five films to be inducted into our Hall of Fame. This way, the list won’t have the same films over and over again. Let’s look at the first ever list.

Third Time’s A Charm

Now has come the time of the year where you have to vote for the most exciting and awesome poll of all!  This is the comeback of  The Most Influential Directors of All Time 3rd edition.

Let’s have a look back at the first year, we had to choose 25 picks and name the most influential directors of all time. I must say that I had a blast doing it and it was so cool receiving all the lists from critics, film lovers, and movie enthusiasts and discovering their choices.

Last year, we reduced the number of entries making the poll a little bit more tougher and keeping in mind that the first year your number one director received 25 points. In 2011, your number one director only received 10 so it kept the race tighter and reduced the chances of total domination by a director widely praised. Twenty-five lists were submitted.

Fritz Lang potential contender for the Top 10?
This year, I take the timing of the new Sight and Sound poll that goes out only every ten years to add another question to the poll. Well, I still want you to name the 10 most influential directors of all time but I want you to choose one film per director on your list (his best, or your favorite, or the one that represents the best his corpus of films). Then what I will do with this information is compile as the usual list of directors. And then, I’ll make a list of the films submitted, the top ten will be a part of a Cinema Hall of Fame. Next year, those films won’t be available anymore because they will be untouchables just like a retired number in sports. It will be like a list of movie essentials. They will be the Great Ones.

You can send your ballots until August 2nd. Why this date? Well it will be my birthday and I have so much fun doing this poll that it is a treat for me.

Don’t forget that anyone can join and the more submissions we receive the more it is interesting and accurate. With twenty-five lists last year I hope we almost double the number of entries making this poll a highly notable event in the cinephile world!

Share the word on Twitter with the #LMdCMID, #LMdC, and in the same time you can follow me @parentmichael.

Banners will come shortly.

What do you think of this year’s poll? Will you help spreading the word? Will Hitchcock will be knocked down from the first place?

2nd edition of The Most Influential Directors of All-Time: The Results

You have waited long enough, here are the final results of the 2011 poll:

1. Alfred Hitchcock
176 pts

It's no surprise that the master of suspense wons again the first price of the Poll. He is listed as number one on nine lists out of twenty-five.

2. Orson Welles
122 pts

The number 2 spot hasn't changed either this year, the director of Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Othello, and The Touch of Evil, just to name a few, diserved his place into this pantheon.

3. Stanley Kubrick (1up)
110 pts

First change this year, Kubrick gaining the bronze medal for his influence, his liberty and the amplitude of his whole oeuvre.

 4. Akira Kurosawa (1 down)
106 pts

If there are ups there are also downs and I'm torn between two of my favorite directors of all-time, Kubrick and Kurosawa. I'm happy for Stanley but I think I would prefer to see Akira stay at the third place because it would be more international and underground. Plus only four points separate one from another!

5. John Ford (1 up)
63 pts

The most respected American director of all-time, with four Academy awards as Best Director (he holds the record) gains one position and should be keeping the rythm through the years with his dense filmography. A director every cinephile should discover from A to Z.

6. Jean-Luc Godard (4 ups)
62 pts

Really close to John Ford, Godard a hated/loved director who did so many films, explored a multitude of narratives, and who digested the History of Cinema with his dense and meaningful Histoire(s) du Cinéma gained four positions. The biggest jump in the whole poll.

7. Martin Scorsese
57 pts

The second living director on this list and the first to still work today (Godard made his final film in 2010 with Film Socialisme). Even if his later films don't have the raw power of his 1970's and 1980's had they are still awaited by the movie-goers and create a certain expectation, especially for me. No move here for Marty, seventh last year and still seventh this year.

8. Ingmar Bergman (3 downs)
50 pts

Even if we haven't understood the whole importance and the message of his films, Bergman diserves his place here. Somewhat he took a drop of 3 positions since last year. His theatrical mise en scène and the fact that he directed foreign films may have affected the votes.

9. Charles Chaplin (6 ups)

The biggest break-up in this year's poll! Chaplin a personal favorite and my idol, gained six places. I think the fact that his films are immortals and that the legend that followed the man himself helped him to pass through time and the memories of the cinephiles.

10. Howard Hawks (1 up)
38 pts

This late entry on the final spot of the list is well deserved. Put into the spotlights by Les Cahiers du Cinéma as the perfect example of a true auteur, his print over genre films (Westerns, Gangsters, comedies) has earned him the respect he deserves. The man could be on the number one spot and I wouldn't even blink!

So that's it for this year! Spread the words that the lists of everyone who participated will be posted gradually on this blog with links and promotion for your blogs!

Poll! Poll! Poll!

Welcome to the first Poll of LMdC (Le Mot du Cinephiliaque), the voting machine up left is asking you a simple question: What period of film reviews would you like to read more about on LMdC? Lately I've been reviewing random films that I am watching, like a film diary.

I've decided to include the members and the readers more into the process and make this blog a more interactive one! I'd like to know which films you want to read about and what would make you want to come back again and again at LMdC.

So, with your votes here it will help me very much to seize your interests. If someone wants a specific film to be reviewed I encourage him/her to leave it in the comments of this post!

I also would like to know if you would be many to participate in a F.W.Murnau Blog-a-Thon?

Go on and vote!

The 25 most influential directors of All-time poll

Starting of the idea of my own list, I ask you to name up to 25 of the most influential directors of all-time.

The list I made last year is about the ones I consider the most influential in my opinion. Your list can be the directors that you think have influenced the most the present directors, or the ones influencing their pairs in the recent years, or the ones that have influenced you in life or in your work.

Feel free to spread the list to anyone it might interest. My own list is Occident oriented because since I live near the USA I'm more in touch with their productions. However, I'd like to receice lists from around the world to populate this poll with different points of view.

Every list will be published and I will link everyone's Blog/Website with his/her list.

You just have to copy and paste the items below, fill it, and send it to me at dark_666_throne@hotmail.com with Top25 in the subject.
