Milestone achieved! Nouveau record établis!

Non je ne parle pas ici du record de Martin Brodeur, mais bien de mon objectif de l'année 2009 qui était d'écouter au minimum 200 films et si possible 200 que je n'ai jamais vus auparavant. En 2008, cet objectif de 200 films a été atteint mais avec plusieurs films que j'avais déjà vus. Cette année, j'ai atteint ce nouveau record avec quelques jours avant la date butoir du 31 décembre 2009. Je vais me fixer le même objectif que l'année 2009 (soit 200 nouveaux films) pour 2010 sauf que j'aimerais revisiter une bonne partie de ma collection de films pour vous offrir des rétrospectives de mes films préférés... C'est mon contrat que je signe ici avec vous.

Il est possible d'avoir ici une liste complète des films que j'ai écoutés cette année.

Ain't talking about Martin Brodeur's recent milestone, but about my latest achievement for the year 2009. It was to watch 200 films and if possible 200 films I ain't seen yet! In 2008, I made this milestone but with a lot of films I already seen. This year I achieved my objective with few days left! For 2010, I plan to watch another 200 never seen before films and to rewatch some of my favorite movies to write retrospectives for my Blog and, by the way, my readers! That is my contract for 2010.

The Young Victoria

The Young Victoria (Jean-Marc Vallée, 2009)

A dramatization of the turbulent first years of Queen Victoria's rule, and her enduring romance with Prince Albert.

Period films tend to be liked and/or disliked by moviegoers; some like the reconstitution of the past and the big budgets. Others dislike that it's History and that we'll know the how it ends.So for that genre the director has to be creative and has to do an amazing job to hold the crowd.

Jean Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y., La liste noire) has made it; he did a beautiful period film that recalls politics and History of the ninetenth century without being too conventionnal and too heavy of dialogues. The love story isn't full of clichés and it sometimes recalls the great film by Sofia Coppola Marie-Antoinette.

The Cinematography recalls Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon that was only lit with natural light that gave a golden glow to the picture.

Emily Blunt's protrayal of Victoria is just right and she shows great strenght as a young actress (who I categorize in the belle laide genre).

The only negative element to this review is my concern about Vallée's director cut which he didn't got on The Young Victoria. I would like so much to see an uncut version of this film which I really enjoyed in its Theatrical release. I'm pretty sure Vallée's vision is even better! Recommended

Mon oncle Antoine

Mon oncle Antoine (Claude Jutra, 1971)

With the holiday season coming I will present and analyze some Christmas movies. This is a film from my country/province. Claude Jutra's 1971 Mon oncle Antoine. In a miner town in the Province of Quebec in the 1940's a young teenager; Benoit who works at the General store witnesses and sees on the 24th of december how the adults behave and live in this joyful time.

The transition of Benoit to the adult wold is well presented on many angles with his discovery of the young Carmen, the death of a boy about his age and the many discussions he will witness at the General store.

With a script that recalls the traditionnal litterature of the first writers of the Province of Quebec, Jutra presents with his documentary style the life and beings of the people living in this little town on the only day of the year that the mine is closed, Christmas Eve.

Meanwhile, the second half of the film is difficult for the characters and it reflects on the viewer that would prefer see the joyful celebrations instead of uncle Antoine being terribly drunk...

I, however, really liked the many interactions between the characters and the generations. I also enjoyed the traditionnal celebrations of Christmas Eve that reminded me how it was the only day the workers had a break of the exhausting working conditions.

Critique en français -

Dans cette série de critiques qui tentera de vous présenter des films à thème/sur fond de Noël pour ce mois de Décembre 2009. Je vous présente un film bien de chez moi. Dans une ville minière au Québec dans les années 1940; Benoît, jeune adolescent qui travaille au magasin général de son oncle Antoine vit et observe en cette journée du 24 décembre comment les adultes qui l'entourent vivent ces réjouissances.

Le passage vers l'âge adulte de Benoît nous est montré sur plusieurs facettes dont sa découverte de la jeune Carmen, le décès d'un jeune homme de son âge et les nombreux échanges dont il est témoin au magasin général.

Avec un scénario qui rappelle la littérature du terroir québécoise, Jutra nous expose avec son style très documentaire la vie d'un village québécois à un rare moment de réjouissances, le réveillon de Noël.

Cependant, la seconde moitié du film est très pénible pour les personnages et peu à peu cela se transmet à l'auditoire qui préférerait de loin assister aux réjouissances qu'à la soulerie monumentale de l'oncle Antoine...

J'ai, par contre, bien aimé les interactions et la musique qui nous rappelle les Noël d'antan et les traditions bien de chez nous.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry)
Un délire visuel extraordinaire! Une histoire originale et attachante. Un film sur l'oubli, l'amour et la mémoire. Un coup de cœur cinématographique!

A visual extravaganza, a funny and original story make this film on love and memory my cinematic crush of 2004!

2. Million Dollar Baby (Clint Eastwood)
Clint Eastwood nous présente plus qu'un film sur la boxe (ou le sport) et comment on doit se surpasser pour atteindre les plus grands sommets d'une discipline. C'est tout ce qui entoure la boxe qui en fait un grand film. L'histoire sportive ne nous intéresse à peine c'est tous les à côtés qui font l'originalité de ce film.

Clint Eastwood didn't made a it has a traditionnal sport film on how you have to suffer to get to your goals. But it's all that surrounds boxing and the relationships betwen the caracters that make this picture really strong.

3. Big Fish (Tim Burton)
L'histoire d'un homme qui approche de la mort et qui a toujours vécu dans ses mensonges. Un hommage à l'un des plus grands films de tous les temps; 8 1/2 de Federico Fellini par l'un de mes cinéastes contemporain préférés; Tim Burton.

The story of a man near his death that always lived in his lies. Being a tribute to Federico Fellini's 8 1/2, Big Fish really hooked me.

4. Kill Bill Vol.2 (Quentin Tarantino)
Le volume 1 et le volume 2 de Kill Bill sont vraiment deux films très différents tant dans leur style que dans leur rythme.

Kill Bill Vol.1 & 2 are two different movies as in their style and rythme.

Beyond the Canon @ The One-Line Review

C'est aujourd'hui que le compatriote Iain Stott du Blogue The One-Line Review a dévoilé son sondage Beyond the Canon qui présente 100 films qui méritent une plus grande attention auprès des cinéphiles.
Pour ce faire, M. Stott a élaboré une liste de 300 films qui sont couramment cités comme étant les plus grands films de tous les temps. Les votes devaient contenir 100 films outre les 300 exclusions listées.

1. Saraband (Ingmar Bergman)
Ingmar Bergman sort de sa retraite pour nous offrir l'un de ses meilleurs films en plus d'être son film final. Grandiose!

Ingmar Bergman offers one of his best film and moreover his final back from his retirement. Magnificent!

2. Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola)
Un film somptueux qui nous fait redécouvrir Bill Murray et découvrir Scarlett Johansson. Une histoire mélancolique et contée dans un style qui se rapproche de Wong Kar-Wai tout en étant très Sofia Coppola. À ne pas manquer!

A somptuous film with the discovery of Scarlett Johansson and th rediscovery of Bill Murray. A melancolic drama filmed like a Wong Kar-Wai film but signed Sofia Coppola. Don't miss it!

3. Hero (Zhang Yimou)
Probablement le film qui m'a le plus jeté à terre en 2003, par ses scènes de combat montées comme un ballet hyper artistique et par son brillant hommage au Rashomon de Kurosawa (mon cinéaste japonais favoris).

Probably the film that amazed me the most in 2003. With the many fight scenes filmed like gracious ballets. But mostly for his briliant tribute to Kurosawa's Rashomon (one of my favorite film and director of all time).

4. Dogville (Lars von Trier)
Malgré tout ce qu'on en a écrit et dit sur ce film, je pense qu'il est à voir et même qu'on peut l'apprécier si l'on peut passer outre la prétention flagrante de von Trier.

Even with all that has been written and said about this film I think it's a must see and one can even appreciate it if he can forget about von Trier's pretenion.

5. Elephant (Gus Van Sant)
Très actuel avec toutes les tueries dans les écoles dont celle de Columbine qui inspira ce film. On ne cherche pas à trouver le coupable mais à montrer comment cela peut toucher une "high school" américaine.

Up to date and of his time, inspired by the Columbine massacre Van Sant doesn't try to find the guilty for this horror but he shows how it involves many people in a High School.

6. Kill Bill Vol.1 (Quentin Tarantino)
Le premier volet de ce film culte inclassable de la part de l'Enfant terrible de Hollywood. On y passe un bon moment.

The first volume of this subgenre cult film by the Enfant terrible of Hollywood. Takes you on a ride for a good time.

7. Mystic River (Clint Eastwood)
Eastwood s'est véritablement fait voler aux Oscars par le couronnement de la trilogie Lord of the Rings. Mystic River; Un film qui marque et qui a marqué les cinéphiles.

Eastwood was robbed at the Oscars by the crowning of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Mystic River; a film that left a memory to the cinephiles.

8. 21 Grams (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu)
Avec un style unique et envoutant, Inarittu nous présente un second film très intéressant avec une distribution toute étoile; Sean Penn, Naomi Watts et Benicio Del Toro.

9. The Return of the King (Peter Jackson)
Le dernier chapitre de l'un des projets les plus ambitieux de l'histoire du Cinéma. Une réussite du mariage blockbuster et film de grande qualité.

The final chapter of one of the most ambitious projects in Cinema. A triomph as a blockbuster and as a great film.

10. Zatoichi (Takeshi Kitano)
Takeshi Kitano fait revivre le personnage culte qu'est Zatoichi le samouraï aveugle. Inventif et très amusant!
